Online Interactive Books for Kids

The library has purchased a new service, interactive books for kids. Interactive books read the story to the child and child can follow along on the page. The books also have sound effects (e.g. the sound of a moving train in Whooo Whooo, Here Comes the Train.) There are currently 10 books in the collection but more will be added in the future if there is interest.

HP Movie Warm-up Party & Tickets

Return to Hogwarts @ BPL! All day Saturday, November 20 at the library we’ll be warming up for a trip to see the movie at 4:40pm.

From 10 am to 12:30 pm we’ll be having a sorting ceremony, trials by trivia, muggle Quidditch, Get Your Wand On, a costume contest and viewing of clips from movies 1-5 of the Harry Potter series. at 1 pm we’ll be showing Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince – the 6th movie. Refreshments from Honeydukes & the Three Broomsticks will be served!

If you want to go see the movie together, we are selling tickets for the 4:40 matinee showing of THE MOVIE at the Regal Cinemas in the Great Northern Mall! Reserve your ticket by signing up at the Circulation Desk, and pay $7.50 per person (any age). We will have the tickets at the library until closing. Please arrange your own transport to the Cinema!

Friends’ Fall Book Sale Happening Now!

A wide selection of books and more are available at our Fall Book Sale

The Friends of Baldwinsville Public Library put on a book sale twice a year to raise funds for the library, one in spring and one in fall. The fall book sale just started today, Friday November 5, and will be open all hours that the library is open through next Tuesday!

We have books, DVDs, VHS tapes, books on CD and even LP records for sale at very reasonable prices now through Sunday November 7. Monday and Tuesday will be Bag Days; buy a bag for $3, then you can fill it with all the books it can hold and take them home to enjoy! And you’ll have the added pleasure of benefitting the library. Money from the Friends of BPL helps the library purchase special equipment and any unexpected expenses that arise between budgets. We hope you’ll come to look and buy some great books or movies as gifts or for your own collection!

Jobseekers – Lots Happening and More to Come!

The Baldwinsville Public Library has been offering workshops for jobseekers since January of this year, and now we’re ramping up our offerings! Besides our Jobseekers’ Lifeline workshops, we’re starting a Job Club, and we’ll be expanding our computer services because of a federal grant!

The library has been awarded a BroadbandExpress Public Computer Center grant from the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). We’re using the money to add computers and provide more training sessions and workshops for job hunters, senior citizens, and small business owners. Hopefully the new computers will be installed and available within the next few weeks, and eventually some computers will be set aside in a place specifically for jobseekers and small business owners, with no time limits on the computers and with books & dvds related to business and job hunting nearby.

Meanwhile, Baldwinsville’s Jobseekers’ Lifeline series will continue every other week, with a different job-related topic every other Friday morning at 10 am. On October 8, the topic will be Tips & Tricks for Online Applications. Many if not most workplaces now require online job applications, and we’ve been helping a lot of people with them! On October 26 the Jobseekers’ Lifeline topic will be Finding the Right Job Opening For You.

On Fridays when there is no formal Lifeline workshop, job-hunters can meet at a new Job Club to swap job tips, ask for advice on their resumes or cover letters, and generally support each other during the painful job hunt process. In October, the Job Club will meet on the 1^st, 15^th, and 29^th at 10 am, usually in Baldwinsville Public Library’s Story Time Room.

So make the B’ville Library one of the tools in your job-hunting toolbox!

Teens and Children – Summer Reading Parties

The adult, children’s and teen summer reading programs have been running along since the beginning of July, and we’re gearing up for the final week! The last day of the summer reading programs is Tuesday, August 17, when we hold the grand finale parties for the kids and teens. Kids 3 years old to fifth grade can come into the library to claim your weekly prizes up until Saturday, August 14. Teens (Make Waves) and adults (Water Your Mind) should visit our online site to log their books and reviews.

Make Waves! Teen Program

Our young adults have been reading up a storm, with over 60,000 pages read, and 71 book reviews posted online! Winners are coming in to claim their weekly prizes, including Team Jacob and Team Edward t-shirts, books, and a beach mat. The final event – read “party” will take place on Tuesday, August 17 at 7pm. We’ll have food, music, and the all-important raffle drawings, including a drawing for the Grand Prize, a $50 gift certificate! Must be present to win the grand prize, winners of the other prizes may collect their prize in days following the party.

Make a Splash! Kids’ Finale – Tom Sieling Summer Party

A Summer Reading sing-along with singer, guitarist and banjo-playing Tom Sieling – a family-friendly fun time for all, exclusively for kids enrolled in our Summer Reading Program! Tom Sieling, renowned all over New York State and beyond, is always a great hit with both parents and kids. The party starts at 2pm, and will include awarding of prizes to those who have participated in the Splash Into Reading Summer Reading Program.
This program is supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum & Library Services.

Tuesday Night is Family Movie Night

We’ve been showing movies in our air-conditioned Community Room on Tuesday nights this summer. For free!!!

All the movies have a Splash, Make Waves, or Water theme in keeping with our kids, teen, and adult Summer Reading Programs, so past Tuesdays included Yellow Submarine, Lilo & Stitch, and Shark-Boy & Lava Girl in 3D. We even had 3D glasses for everyone who came! Cool drinks are also provided so we can all beat the heat.

Our upcoming movies are

Finding Nemo (yes, you may have seen it, but it is always good!) on July 27
Happy Feet (gotta love those dancing penguins, & great animation) on August 3
You get to vote on which movie to watch on August 10! Vote for either
- Flipper starring Paul Hogan and Elijah Wood (1996) or
- Free Willy – the original movie about an orca and his boy savior (1993)

Vote on movie night, or else pick up a ballot at the front Circulation Desk anytime the library is open. One vote per person, please.

Lebanese Cuisine presents A Succulent Summer Series!

We’re offering another series of Lebanese Cuisine Cooking Classes at the Baldwinsville Public Library!Wednesdays 2:00pm – 4:00pm on July 21^st, July 28^th, and August 4

Wednesday, July 21st: Coosa (A Middle Eastern Specialty Summer Squash filled with a savory stuffing) paired with a Tasty Tomato Soup.

Wednesday, July 28st: Kafta Kabobs (A Zesty Middle Eastern Meat Kabob) paired with a Crisp Cucumber & Tomato Herb Salad.

Wednesday, August 4th: Kibbee (Meat Pie blended with bulgur wheat and sensational spices) paired with Labana (Homemade Lebanese Yogurt).

Register Now! Advance sign-up is required and a fee of $15 for the cost of ingredients will be collected at the classes. This summer, we have something for everyone. Kids, Teens, and Adults are all invited to join in our water-themed summer reading programs:

For Kids: Make a Splash, Read!

For ages 3 to going into 5^th Grade: Read 15 minutes a day, and keep track of what you’ve read. Report your reading at the library each week for prizes! Registration starts June 28 at the Children’s Desk and continues through July. Summer fun with a purpose!

Kids enrolled in the Summer Reading Program may attend special events. For details, see our Make a Splash flyer!
